Shrimps 1-1 Cambridge Utd

  • On January 27, 2020

Saturday 25 Jan, Globe Arena, Lge 2 ,3pm.

As we found ourselves back at the bottom, it was imperative that we continue the progression made under DA and take something from this game. Weirdly, it was possibly our worst performance in some time, and against more dangerous opposition we could have suffered. However, Cambridge dominated possession but did little with it.

On a relatively calm and cold afternoon the first half was disjointed, lacking quality all over the park from both sides, we looked like two teams who hadn’t won in ages, which isn’t too far from the truth. As the second half started, Slew cut in and his shot landed at Cole’s feet, his effort was blocked but fell nicely fro Phillips to shoot into the roof of the net to give us the lead.

This should have spurred us on, but inexplicably we sat back, dropping deeper and deeper onto the edge of our box, inviting the U’s on to us. DA maintained in his post match this was not his tactic, but it id cost us. With us failing time after time to get out of our own half, a corner was met at the back post and tapped home by Knibbs to equalise, it had been coming for some time.

As we finally woke up the game became stretched and was immediately a little better, however our passing was at times schoolboy error strewn. Still we managed to create and miss the best chance of the game, Cole wriggling free and nutmegging his defender before side footing a foot wide with the g\keeper committed.

AJ came on and created half a yard and his curling effort, redolent of the Orient winner, was brilliantly clawed away by the alert Mitov. So it ended all square.

Perhaps three months ago we would have lost that game, with Cheatenage losing we leapfrogged them to 23rd. It was uninspiring, with the new lads catching our old disease of lack of fluency and poor passing and a poor first touch, so to take a point must be looked upon as a positive. We played a lot better at Northampton yet we lost 4-1?? Funny game football. Nearly 2000 crowd with 132 from the U’s, so a good turnout, who all deserved better than what was served.

We have a chance to put that behind us with our first visit to Walsall, let us hope we can make amends there?
