The Shrimps travelled to deepest Essex to take on high flying Colchester with some decent performances but not many points.
At last, they performed well and got what they deserved in a display many fans have said has been coming.
In a first half, the away side took the game to the home team for all but ten minutes. It was the Shrimps who channelled possession through the midfield and attempted to keep the ball on the ground, while Colchester persisted in using long balls out to the wide men to turn the away defence.
On the day though, both Tanner and the returning Conlan played superbly and ended up causing the U’s more problems themselves.
In a fairly even first period, Allesandra forced Gerken into a fab save after good work from OSullivan and at the other end Baz saved well from a Nouble effort.
You would have expected the promotion chasers to step up after the break but it wasn’t to be. Tanner broke well down the right and almost set up OSullivan, Ellison brought Stockton in and he had shot deflected for a corner. Lavelle rose well and forced another smart save from Gerken. The home side were reduced to long balls towards Nouble and the ineffective Theo Robinson, which were dealt with brilliantly by the robust Old and the ever alert Lavelle.
On 66 minutes the games only goal come, Cole stealing in at the near post to flash a header past a stranded Gerken from a Lewis corner.
Both sides made changes, but part from a tip over from Baz, and some superb handling under pressure from him from numerous corners, Colchester were blunted.
Lewis nearly added a second, bamboozling Prosser and hitting the side netting from a tight angle. Conlan defied an equaliser with a superb block in the four minutes of injury time as we held on.
So the second win of the season was achieved with a performance of resilience and heart, Brewitt was our MOM, but Conlan, Kenyon, Tanner, Old, Lavelle, Kev, Lewis and all the others were worthy of the accolade.
As one fan of the home side said afterwards, Colchester played the side at the bottom not the Shrimps side that turned up.
