Cobblers 4-1 Shrimps

  • On January 19, 2020

False dawn? Possibly.

Our recent away form proved difficult to shake off as the Cobblers proved ruthless on the day to tear into the recent revival.

An unchanged starting 11 gave consistency, the only change being new keeper Mafoumbi on the bench. The Shrimps first chance was hammered over by Slew who was a little off balance. However, Phillips pulling the strings, Stockton shot tamely at the keeper after a good pull back. Tanner had a chance blocked on the line from a corner  and a decent save from Cornell after good work by Slew we looked positive and were the better side. Then things changed, a speculative cross from way out deceived Halstead as an advancing forward waved a foot at it and staled init the net for 1-0 to the home side. Still we pressed forward and a Phillips cut back was volleyed goal wards and blocked by the unlucky Diagouraga. As half time approached, an equaliser still looked on the cards, but Adams created space from Watson to rifle home from an angle in injury time and a flattering 2-0 scoreline resulted at HT.

Still all to play for, we continued to push forward, Carlos with some great runs however the second ball let us down. With frustration building it was compounded when a long shot was well saved by Halstead only for it to fall at Adams feet to tap in after they countered quickly to make it 3-0. It seemed everything they hit was going in on the day!!.We did get on the mark when a Stockton turn and shot was palmed away for Phillips to pounce and pull one back. With hope still intact as we pressed, Diagouraga dwelt in possession and the cross was volleyed home superbly by Lines for 4-1.

After that it was down to Halstead too keep the core down as we capitulated, and in truth it could have been more in the last ten minutes. but for 75 we gave as good as we got, the difference was the finishing!

With Stevenage belting Cambridge, we return to the bottom, but Cambridge are our visitors next week, onwards and hopefully upwards!!
